What Will Your Renovation be?

Typically, a new residence will require renovations to accommodate a new owner’s needs and desires. An existing residence may also need updating, sometimes extensive, to accommodate changes to the family, the desire to modernize, or the need to add modern Smart Home technology. Often the expectation is to create or continue the reproduction look of a funeral mausoleum, colonial barn, or classical museum house.

Obviously, it’s one thing to preserve a historically significant residence. It’s intended to be a museum. It’s quite another, to continue a renovation to look like a historical structure when you live in a modern world. Inevitably the inside “renovations” are often expected to be very modern and have all the latest technological “Smart Home” marvels. The other option is to try to conceal all these technologies within the reproduction design. The results are sadly the same. People laughing at the owner because of their bad taste. The biggest laugh comes from understanding they’ve been taken to the cleaner’s with greatly unnecessarily inflated costs. As a result, the renovation continues an uncomfortable place to live,  costly to operate, an aesthetic hodge podge of mismatched styles, and modern conveniences somehow stuffed so they do not change the “period” decor. Why?

In the real world, funeral mausoleums, colonial barns, and classical museums were originally built at a time when there were limitations in construction technology as well as the absence of the modern conveniences desired in today’s homes. There’s also the situation where owners think just because they have money, they know more than professional architects, engineers, or interior designers about design and aesthetics. The sad reality is that they’re unsuspecting sheep with little knowledge of materials or furnishings, little or no contact with suppliers and are going to be sheared like sheep and fleeced from their money with unnecessarily inflated costs.

Unfortunately, there’re still plenty of unscrupulous architects, engineers, and interior designers ready to agree to any convoluted building design a client wants while they artificially inflate costs, design and build outlandish monstrosities,  “steal” the clients’ money, and laugh all the way to the bank.
